How to Reach the Retention Department
General customer service cannot lower your bill. They do not have the permission. Retention does, and getting transferred there takes one sentence.
Why general support says no
The person who picks up the phone is reading from a script and working from a system that does not contain discounts. When they tell you nothing is available, they are usually telling the truth about what they can see.
Retention is a separate team with separate authority. It exists because keeping a customer costs the company less than winning a new one, and the people on it are measured on whether you stay.
The sentence that gets you there
Do not ask for a discount. Ask to be transferred.
"I am looking at my bill and thinking about my options. Can you transfer me to retention?"
That is the whole thing. It is not a threat and it does not need to be. The word "retention" is the one that routes the call.
If they say there is no retention department, ask for the loyalty department or the cancellations team. Different companies call it different things and some agents genuinely do not know the internal name.
What it is called at each provider
Cox: the loyalty department. Searched about five hundred times a month by people who cannot find it.
Xfinity and Comcast: retention, sometimes reached through the cancellations queue.
Spectrum: retention. Ask directly.
DirecTV: the loyalty or cancellations team. Satellite accounts carry a two year agreement, so check how many months are left before you push, because leaving early costs twenty dollars per remaining month.
When you get through
Say what is on your bill, not what you want. "I have a charge here that is not a tax and I would like it reviewed" gives them something to act on. "Can you lower my bill" gives them nothing.
Then stop talking. The silence after a specific request is doing work. Most people fill it and talk themselves back down.
If the answer is no, hang up politely and call again another day. A different agent has different authority and a different set of offers in front of them. This is not a trick, it is how the system is built.
Send me your bill. Reading it is free.
Reading your bill is free either way. If I save you money, my share is a quarter less for anyone 50 or over. There is no form to fill in and nothing to prove: no date of birth, no ID.
This is not offered anywhere else on the site. Scan the code or use the link, and the reduced rate is applied automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Is there really a separate retention department?
Yes. It is a real team with authority general support does not have. It exists because keeping an existing customer is cheaper for the company than finding a new one.
What if they say there is no retention department?
Ask for the loyalty department or the cancellations team instead. Companies use different internal names and some agents do not know which one applies.
Do I have to threaten to cancel?
No. Saying you are thinking about your options is enough to route the call. An actual threat you are not willing to follow through on tends to backfire.
What is the best day to call?
Mid week, mid morning. Monday queues are long and Friday afternoon agents are closing out.
