How to Lower Your Cable Bill
This is the whole method and it costs nothing. It works because most of what is on your bill was never negotiated by anybody.
First, read the bill properly
Not the total. The lines. Most bills separate the package price from a set of charges added on top, and those add-ons are where the movement is.
Look for anything called a fee, a surcharge, a recovery charge or an administrative charge. Those are set by the provider, not by any government, and the provider will confirm that in its own published terms.
Then look at what you are renting. Equipment charges of ten to fifteen dollars a month are common and frequently apply to a box somebody returned years ago.
Second, find out what a new customer pays
Open your provider website in a private browser window and price the same package at your own address as though you were signing up today.
The gap between that number and your bill is the entire conversation. It is also the only figure in this process that nobody can argue with, because it is their own advertised price.
Third, call the right team
General support cannot approve a discount. Ask to be transferred to retention, or the loyalty department, and start there.
Then be specific. Name the charge, quote the number you found, and stop talking.
"A new customer at my address pays X for this package. I have been here four years and I am paying Y. Can you look at that?"
Fourth, know what to do with a no
A no from one agent is not a no from the company. Call back on a different day and you reach a different person with different authority and a different set of offers.
If that fails, the FCC takes informal complaints about billing for free. It takes about fifteen minutes, needs no lawyer, and the provider has thirty days to respond in writing. That complaint does not land in the call centre.
Most people never get this far, which is exactly why it works.
When this does not work
If you are already on the cheapest package with no add-ons, there may be nothing to find. If you signed up in the last few months you are probably already on the promotional rate. And if there is no competitor at your address, you have less leverage and it is honest to say so.
Some bills are fair. If yours is, the useful thing is to know that and stop worrying about it.
Send me your bill. Reading it is free.
Reading your bill is free either way. If I save you money, my share is a quarter less for anyone 50 or over. There is no form to fill in and nothing to prove: no date of birth, no ID.
This is not offered anywhere else on the site. Scan the code or use the link, and the reduced rate is applied automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Does calling actually work?
Often, yes, when you reach the team that has authority and ask about something specific. A general request to lower the bill usually gets a general no.
How much can I expect to save?
It depends entirely on what is on your bill. Somebody paying for unused equipment and a lapsed promotion has more to find than somebody on a bare package.
Will they cut off my service if I push?
No. Asking about your own bill is not a reason for anybody to lose service.
How often should I do this?
Once a year, and always thirty to sixty days before a promotion ends. Once you are paying the higher rate you have shown you will absorb it.
