Emergency Rent & Utility Help: Where to Get It (Free) - BillRelief Check guide

If rent or the power bill is the emergency this month, there is real, legitimate help, and you do not have to pay anyone to find it. The key is knowing the right places to turn and moving before a due date or shutoff. Here is where to turn.

Start with one free phone call: 2-1-1

Dial 2-1-1 (run by United Way) from anywhere in the U.S. It connects you to local programs for rent, utilities, food, and more, matched to your ZIP code. It is free, confidential, and often the fastest way to reach money that is actually available near you right now. You can also search at 211.org.

For energy bills: LIHEAP

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible low-income households pay heating and cooling bills, and in many states it can cover a past-due balance or stop a shutoff. Income limits vary by state. Apply through your state's LIHEAP office, which you can find via usa.gov or by calling 2-1-1.

For rent: local rental assistance and Community Action

Emergency rental help is largely local now. Your county, city, and Community Action Agency often run funds for people facing eviction, and local charities and faith groups do too. 2-1-1 is the fastest way to find what is open in your area. If you are already facing eviction, ask about legal aid at the same time, many areas offer it free.

Call your provider first, too

Before a shutoff, call the utility or landlord directly and ask about hardship programs, payment plans, budget billing, or a due-date change. Many will work with you if you reach out early, and our free letter pack includes a due-date-change request you can send.

Watch for the scams that target people in a bind

People in a crunch are exactly who scammers target. No real assistance program charges a fee to apply, asks for gift cards, or needs your bank login to "release" funds. If you see that, it is a scam, see how to spot free-money scams. Legitimate help comes through 2-1-1, your state, and established nonprofits.

Then get ahead of next month

Once the immediate fire is out, a little planning keeps you from being back here. Our free paycheck planner shows the days you will run short before they arrive, and the budget tool shows which bills you can lower.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get emergency help with rent or utilities?

Start by dialing 2-1-1 (United Way), which connects you to local rent, utility, and food assistance. For energy bills specifically, apply to LIHEAP through your state. Community Action Agencies and local nonprofits also offer emergency funds.

What is LIHEAP and who qualifies?

LIHEAP is the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. It helps eligible low-income households pay heating and cooling bills, and sometimes covers past-due balances or shutoff prevention. Income limits vary by state; apply through your state's LIHEAP office.

Is emergency rent and utility help free to apply for?

Yes. Applying for LIHEAP, 2-1-1 referrals, and Community Action assistance is always free. No legitimate program charges a fee to process emergency aid or asks for gift cards or your bank login.

What if my utility is about to be shut off?

Call your utility company immediately and ask about their hardship or budget-billing programs and any shutoff moratorium, then call 2-1-1 and apply for LIHEAP. Acting before the shutoff date gives you the most options.
